Can a car pull a horse trailer?
I have a 2005 Buick Century. Can it handle pulling a 1 or a 2 horse, horse trailer safely? If not, what car does have this capability? I don't want a truck or an SUV.
In Europe they pull horse trailers with cars all the time. BUT there is a catch (Actually two).
First and foremost: The trailer MUST have a brake axle and the the car must be wired for it so that the brake axle on the trailer is stopping the trailer NOT the brakes of the car.
Second: The car really needs to be a manual. Most cars have automatic transmissions that are not designed to pull with. Using such an automatic to pull a horse trailer with will burn it out.
Options: A good sized car with a manual transimission. A small truck again I still advise a manual transmission and the brake axle. I also suggest a 4 wheel drive as it can be hard to get them started if you stop facing uphill. A full sized truck but some of them are too light in the automatic transmission department as well, it just depends on what truck.
If you want to save gas and have a LOT of money to spend the newer dodge trucks with the Cummins Diesel get up to 30 miles per gallon even in the 4 wheel drive version. The older ones (late 80's early 90's get 18 to 20). Mine gets 20 miles to the gallon it is a 92 Dodge 1 ton. But I pull a very heavy trailer with up to 4 horses at a time in it. Even then I get 14 mpg while pulling (maybe a little better). I will be switching to used vegetable oil when I get it back. It was supposed to be done two days ago but they had to wait on a part he just got ysterday. So I am hoping I will have it by noon. (2 hours from now)
Each vehicle type has pros and cons. What you need will depend on many things. Keep in mind that many full sized trucks are now getting in excess of 20 miles per gallon if it is the gas you are worried about.
Keep in mind that while towing a small engine often gets less gas mileage than a big one because it works harder.
